my son is 18 months old and has just been allowed to start watching the baby einstein videos–he loves neighborhood animals and world animals and asks for them daily (we watch either “ducks!” or “growls!” once a day). after a trip on an airplane over thanksgiving, we decided to get On The Go for him to mix it up a little…

Buy,Download, Or Stream Baby Einstein - On the Go - Riding, Sailing and Soaring! Click Here

there are indeed good things about this video, but these good things are also encased in bad:

1. lots of different vehicles–probably too many different ones, in fact…do we need both a ’sailBOARD’ AND a ’sailBOAT’ in the same segment?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Baby Einstein - On the Go - Riding, Sailing and Soaring! Click Here

2. loads of BRIGHT colors–but this video has more computer images than ‘real life’ puppets…the opening segment with the raccoon driving the car over the bright green CG road is a bit much and feels like something from an austin powers movie

3. the music in this video has an eerie/music box quality to parts of it–the music that accompanies the spinning wheel (which has a car, a plane, a boat and a train on it) is very mellow and tinkly and then the same tune is repeated at various times throughout the video…yes, it’s a classical tune BUT it’s a watered down, synthesizer version and that just doesn’t cut it.

4. lots of repetition–i.e., the opening sequence features an eye-level shot of a boy riding in a toy car that’s pushed by a girl…you see this same footage about 5 minutes later in the ‘on the land’ segment.

overall, this is a decent dvd (i’m not going to bash it for all of the frontloaded garbage that you have to fast-forward through to get to the real dvd…that’s too easy–but suffice it to say it is a pain)–the train segment is great and the vehicles are pretty cool (there are tons of shots of various ones, too)…unlike Neighborhood Animals or World Animals, my son did not want to watch this one straight through–and to me, that’s a good thing.

I am so impressed that Disney could come up with a video that was better than Baby McDonald which WAS my daughter’s all time favorite, but she now has a new Baby Einstein that she loves just a little bit more!!! She was literally sitting on the edge of her chair while she watched Baby On the Go while alternately getting up and flying like a plane or make choo-choo noises or singing the verses she knows of Wheels on the Bus. I was surprised by how much she interacted versus some of the kid’s shows were she just glazes over. So, not only is this entertaining, it is a great learning tool.

We have been incredibly impressed with the recent Baby Einstein videos that have come out in the past couple of years, and only let our daughter watch television once or twice a week. That said, the only thing she ever wants to watch is Baby McDonald, Baby Galileo, Baby Noah and now, Baby On the Go. I would recommend this to any and all moms, and in fact just bought two more as gifts. Well done, Disney!

There’s a simple reason this movie has taken so long to compose, and it’s this: while Douglas Adams’ classic The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a hilarious book, it’s a rubbish current.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy! Click Here

I mean that in the nicest possible method - it’s one of my favourite books, but it’s barely a yarn at all - more a dwelling of dead-eye, deadpan observations on the absurdity of life, and particularly the British blueprint of life, revolving very loosely around a chap in a dressing-gown. While that’s substantial fodder for a comedy read, it’s no basis for a coherent, 90 slight motion narrate, especially one having the American market in mind.

It’s a matter of portray that Douglas Adams realised there was no memoir, but not until it was too slow to fix it (about halfway through book two) . From that point onwards made several attempts to pull everything support into a single coherent, archetypal legend but totally failed, and in the process ruined the remaining three and a half books themselves, none of which are amusing, let alone a suitable myth.

A film-maker has a choice, therefore: stick with the material and film something which is not so powerful a screenplay as an extended, themed version of Saturday Night Live, or do some vital injure to the source material - “zap straight off to its major data banks and reprogram it with a very spacious axe”, if you will - and obtain a narrative out of it.

The first option will in equal measure thrill and nettle the party faithful, but bore the rest of the population; the second will most likely nettle the party faithful, but at least has a chance with everyone else. Since the Hitch-Hiker’s Guide is now twenty years mature, there is probably a whole generation who, so far in their lives, have missed it altogether, so you can hardly blame director Garth Jennings for choosing option two.

What instead we should do is lift our hats off to him: he’s fashioned a vast yarn but preserved surprising amounts of the source; his innovations are sympathetic and in a couple of cases (the point-of-view gun and the face-slapping devices on the Vogsphere) are a match for the unusual material; the fabulous production produce thoroughly captures the loveable Britishness of Adams’ account (the Vogons glide somewhere between the schoolmasters of `70s Pink Floyd and the sort of bureaucrats whom you might obtain unhurried the desks of some Ministry of Monty Python’s devising), and on top of all that he’s coaxed some astonishing performances out of the cast. Martin Freeman captures Arthur Dent’s everyman perfectly and has valid chemistry with Zooey Deschanel’s Trillian; John Malkovich, Bill Nighy, Bill Bailey and both the new Arthur Dent and Marvin from the BBC TV series develop hilarious cameos, as does the smiling face of the slack creator himself, Douglas Adams, as the very last shot of the movie. That was a comely touch.

The less forgiving purists are slump to gripe about what’s missing; but on the whole I’m the more forgiving sort of purist. Perhaps there is something base in the conspicuous omission the Babel Fish “proof” for the non-existence of God - was that a Disney-required edit or unprejudiced my perfectly normal paranoia? - and I was a bit shaded my favourite exchange in all of Douglas Adams’ writing was omitted (Arthur: “It’s at times like this, when I’m trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die from asphyxiation in deep situation that I really wish I’d listened to what my mother told me when I was young.” Ford: “Why? What did she say? ” Arthur: “I don’t know, I didn’t listen”), but overall this was an extremely delectable, touching experience and I can’t judge of a better procedure to have rounded off an otherwise trying Thursday.

Thursdays. I never could secure the hang of Thursdays.

Olly Buxton

Having owned the first release of this movie on DVD, when I heard it was coming out on Blu-Ray I had to occupy it up; after all, this was the movie that convinced me to take up Douglas Adams’ spectacular written novels (from Hitchhiker’s to Dirk Gently) and give them a read. While watching the movie in 1080i was a pleasure, I was rather disappointed to bag that many of the special features found on the unique disc - including the absolutely shiny interface with the interactive improbability drive that occasionally took you to an Easter Egg - were stripped out of the Blu-Ray disc. I could have even dealt with the loss of the interface in exchange for the movie showcase menu that allows you to access features, capture scenes, and access the setup while the movie is playing, if only they had provided all the enlighten on the fresh DVD. I’ve experienced this now on a couple of Blu-Ray discs and I acquire it quite upsetting (officially entering rant territory), that despite the capacity for Blu-Ray discs to gain 80% more data than a DVD, and 40% more data than a HD disc, that companies are skimping on features and selling the discs at an inflated impress. While Blu-Ray may be the salubrious format, it’s not going to gather in market standing by the release of nefarious products.

Although it has been almost a year since “Rotund Metal Awe! - The Second Raid” premiered in Japan, US fans can finally rejoice over the release of the long-awaited sequel to one of the most unlikely hits in new Anime history. With the same cast of savory characters, wonderfully novel tale, and extraordinary art and character produce, the “Stout Metal Scare” franchise comes to a thrilling and unexpected ending that will not leave a single fan unsatisfied.

Although peace seemed to return to the life of our young hero, Sousuke Sagara at the raze of Season 1, it’s certainly not easy being a teenage mercenary-soldier-elite being called to battles all over the world AND trying to protect his graceful high-school friend Kaname Chidori at the same time. Things don’t accept any easier for Mithril either, when on a routine mission in a remote third-world country, it is discovered that rogue governments have acquired anti-ECS (Electronic Cloaking System) technology, as well as other high-tech weaponry which poses a threat unlike any Mithril has faced before. Tasked with hunting down the organization responsible for distributing such technology is the distinguished Uruz Team, consisting of our frail friends Mao, Kurz, and Sousuke. In the process of hunting down this mysterious organization - known only as “Amalgam” - Sousuke struggles with both his gain shy emotions as well as modern enemies - including two merciless, young female assassins. And unbiased when it seems things are at their worst, Sousuke receives the unthinkable order - to return to unfriendly - permanently. Nothing is positive in this thrilling conclusion - not even Death.

Without a doubt, “Fleshy Metal Fear! - The Second Raid” is perhaps one of the best Anime SEQUELS ever made - I stress the word “Sequel” to avoid any misinterpretations. Brought support once more is the improbable novel cast and crew, including the English Dub (Funimation purchased the rights for “The Second Raid”, but the cast is the same as the ADV Fresh dubs of the first two) . Also returning is Music Composer Toshihiko Sahashi, whose proper hands craft another huge soundtrack. And once again, Shoji Gatoh’s writing creates a improbable fable, even-further-developed characters, and an unforgettable experience overall. This Anime is serene one of my absolute favorites, and will most likely be so for a very long time to reach.

Note - There is no word yet on whether this DVD position (released by Funimation Entertainment) will believe the 2006-released OAV, starring Teletha Testarossa. However, as with most OAVs, one can hope that it will be released as a special feature/additional episode in the final disc. But again, it is not clear yet.

After a shrimp comedic detour with Fumoffu, Corpulent Metal Awe has returned to the roots of its first anime version, which focused more on the action and drama with interludes of humor. Like the first season, The Second Raid alternates between the the risky missions of Mithril and the almost as perilous interactions between Sousuke and Chidori at school. As this suitable first volume begins, Sousuke and his team, the fair Mao and the perverted blooming boy Kurz are sent in to hold out a despotic dictator who’s managed to earn his hands on some highly advanced weapons technology. We are also introduced to the main villain of the share, a insane psychotic named Gates who is a deplorable between the charming personalities of the Joker and Darth Vader. The thing that makes him more of a threat is that he operates a Venom AS equipped with the Lambda Driver similar to the one Gauron ragged to almost slay Sousuke in the first present. But unlike Sousuke, he can activate the Driver at will. Sagara is beginning to lose hope that he will ever be able to control its power. But he might not have to peril too powerful longer, because Gates’s concept is to win Sagara’s AS for himself. And he’s got two deadly assassins and spies in Mithril to abet him out.

This first volume started out a itsy-bitsy rough at the edges because the transitions from Fumoffu style school hijinks to two killer sisters touching each other inappropriately in the shower fair didn’t gel. When the note focuses on one aspect, either the comedy, or the action/drama, it works incredibly well. But when it mixes the two in the same episode, it seems unnatural. Thankfully most of the dvd does the venerable. Even though this is rated for ages 14 and up, there is some pudgy on nudity, and some extremely graphic violence. For example, a Mithril agent gets his throat slash with a knife in uncouth closeup with nothing left to the imagination. The animation overall is unbelievable for a TV present and the writing is also fine kindly, especially in the episodes where the Mithril team walks into a trap in a tunnel labyrinth, which really ratchets up the suspense. Respectable open to the series.

DVD EXTRAS:

There is short bonus episode that is really a teaser trailer for the series. There are also three extremely enchanting documentaries: The first is a Japanese Self-Defense Tour exhibition that the show’s staff attended to fetch reference for the vehicles and weapons customary in FMP. The second is situation shooting in Hong Kong by the director and author of the novels which is a nice tour of the city. Finally, there is a brief history of the Light New in Japan, with a focus on the publisher of the FMP books. Also includes spruce opening/closing.

This is an amazingly genuine film with a superlative performance by John Pain in the role of Quentin Crisp, a flamboyant English homosexual in the days when being such was anything but comfortable. Brilliantly played by Wound, Crisp was a born in 1908 and was aware that he was different from an early age. He grew up in an era where homosexuality was not an option as a life style. Aloof, he managed to form it in a world that was decidedly bad to those like him. Witty and self assured, he lived his life as he wanted, despite the hardships he faced due to his self professed homosexuality. He was a trailblazer and poster boy for an alternative life style.

John Wound deservedly won the British Best Actor award for his incisive portrayal of Quentin Crisp. It is no wonder that his performance was critically acclaimed. It is nothing short of smart. His is a touching and sympathetic portrayal of an individual who wanted nothing more than to be able to be himself. It is a performance that is not to be missed. The film is an absolute gem.

“John Distress”, quoth Quentin Crisp, “is my representative on earth.” And so he is. The two men become indistinguishable. I bought this film because I wanted to look John Wound and didn’t really care in whatever character - in fact I was disturbed this might be a comic exploitative fairy comedy like “A cage of fools”. But then I got captivated, and not only because Harm makes a really cute fairy (and shows so mighty skin) . The film has a lot of atmosphere, there are many witticisms - my well-liked is Quentins reason why he thinks he’d gain a splendid soldier: “Anyone can score killed. Even I can do that.” There is so great that is ridiculous and sometimes terrifying, so considerable that is gloomy, or silly, or deeply inspiring like the courtroom scene. In the extinguish the film left me wondering why a man must suffer so grand for simply being different, when his being different hurts no one.

Released in the mid ’60s, “The Gross Dachshund” tells the memoir of Brand Garrison (portrayed by the very talented and likeable Dean Jones) and his wife, Fran (portrayed by the equally talented and likeable Suzanne Pleshette), and their pet dachshund, Danka.

One day, Tag arrives at the family vet’s clinic to consume up Danka and her 3 newborn pups. Before leaving with the pups, the doctor is able to talk Impress into taking home a tall dane pup as well. This really makes Mark’s day since he has never really cared considerable for dachshunds, but has instead always longed for a titanic expansive “man’s” dog. From there on out, it’s war in the Garrison household as the substantial dane, Brutus, grows up and becomes the “scape goat” for a lot of dreadful behavior brought about by the 3 recent dachshunds.

Poor Brutus, it seems as though he will never be completely celebrated in a home that only has room for dachshunds.

However, in the waste, after numerous misadventures and a few arguments with Sign, Fran is finally won over by the steady Brutus’ endearing warmth and charm.

It’s a shame that virtually no one has ever heard of or seen this completely improbable exiguous “lost” Disney classic. “The Horrible Dachshund” is, in my notion, and certainly most everyones’ who has seen it, not only one of Disney’s greatest films, but one of the best movies ever released…period.

If you loved “Lady and the Tramp”, “101 Dalmatians” and “Primitive Yeller”, you simply must inspect … “The Repugnant Dachshund”!!

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Ugly Dachshund! Click Here

The Shocking Dachshund is the chronicle of a Tall Dane who grows up thinking he’s a limited Dachshund. Fran Garrison (played by Suzanne Pleshette) absolutely dotes on her runt Dachshund, driving her husband Tag (Dean Jones) crazy. The cute microscopic dog–and subsequent litter of puppies–doesn’t really fit his thought of what a man’s dog should be, and after getting a speeding imprint while rushing the mom-to-be to the vet, Impress opts to bring home (unbeknownst to his wife) one of the doc’s Gigantic Dane puppies as his bear.

It’s soon apparent that one of the pups isn’t quite what it seems, and worse, even as he grows in size, the Dane believes he’s unprejudiced a miniature Dachshund. Though angels in Fran’s eyes, the doxies are mercurial to cause grand amounts of pain, always pinning their antics on their larger “brother.” The chronicle devolves into a battle of the sexes between Impress and his “manly” Gargantuan Dane and Fran and her microscopic Dachshunds, coming to a climax at a party Fran throws to designate the assume of an upcoming dog note.

Of course, being a Disney film, everything works out in the waste. The film certainly isn’t one of the best to have approach out of the Disney studios of the era, but it’s silly (if predictable) and should execute for a wonderful afternoon’s entertainment with one’s children.

I made two mistakes when I bought this collection. It is the second of two sets and it is only available in Japanese with subtitles. I dislike reading subtitles and my japanese language skills are cramped. Maybe I will deem better of it when my view of Japanese language improves.

Directed by George Stevens and starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, PENNY SERENADE was among the most admired films of 1941. But it seems the film has now drifted into public domain, and the result is incredibly dire: a very muddy soundtrack coupled to a recount that shudders and shakes so that you can barely stand to scrutinize at it.

This a titanic pity, for PENNY SERENADE is a fair film that deserves grand better. The understanding is simple: as wife Julie (Irene Dunne) packs to leave her husband Roger (Cary Grant), she plays the various records the two have peaceful over the years. Each recording recalls the various phases of their lives: their chance meeting, their rather unexpected marriage, early years spent in the far east. But they are heart-broken in their inability to have a child–and so they return to the United States to adopt. But their happiness ends in tragedy, a tragedy which neither seem able to surmount.

The epic is sentimental melodrama, of course, but it transcends its believe genre. George Stevens was one of the colossal directors of Hollywood’s golden age–director of such diverse classics as A Spot IN THE SUN, SHANE, and WOMAN OF THE YEAR. In lesser hands the film might have been reduced to pure soap, but he strikes the perfect balance between charm and tearfulness. The leads are equally perfect, with both Irene Dunne and Cary Grant (who were memorably teamed in such frantic screwball comedies MY Common WIFE and THE Abominable TRUTH) discarding their enormous comedic skills in favor of plausible humor and sincerity. The supporting cast, which sports nice performances by the likes of Beulah Bondi and Edgar Buchanan, is also very attractive, the script is quite agreeable, and the cinematography both functional and radiant.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Penny Serenade! Click Here

But all this counts for nothing if you cannot actually stand to spy the truly bad DVD versions available. And they really are that abominable. Over the years I’ve picked up several copies of this film released by several companies–Madacy, Laserlight, and most recently Front Row–and although the transfers vary a bit from company to company they are never more than extremely poor and quite often down-right unwatchable. This is a film in desperate need of restoration, and until it receives that you’re better off looking for it on the late-late show–for I can almost guarantee that the print you will get there will be reliable to virtually any home-market release you can lay hands on.

–GFT (Amazon reviewer) –

If, like me, you are looking for classic movies on dvd BEWARE! Mandacy Entertainment are producing sub-standard dvds at a seemingly bargain imprint. They expend movies whose copyrights have speed out and slap them on a dics to cash in on the growing popularity of dvd. Do not extinguish your money!! The transfers are worse than unpleasant. It makes VHS contemplate vastly great - in fact, it even makes daguerreotypes notice genuine!

As for the movie - it’s a sweet sentimental anecdote that’s definately worth watching, especially if you are a Cary Grant fan. 4 stars for the movie. 0 stars for the dvd.

This (yellow poster on DVD case) is the Hal Roach edition of the 1950 film starring Jose Ferrer. I’m aware of two other editions: Alpha Video, & Marengo Films. The Alpha Video edition (elephantine colour head shot of Cyrano) is crap — not worth $5. The Marengo edition (sunless poster on DVD case), while smart in sound & video, is darker than this Hal Roach edition. In several necessary scenes taking region outdoors at night, this edition shows more detail and is easier to seek. It has a minor flaw, a purple band that slowly rolls from bottom to top of the screen; I can eliminate it by reducing the colour intensity on my monitor.

I have all three editions; this is the one I inspect.

This Hal Roach Studios production from Image Entertainment is the best of the best. Flawlessly transferred from modern 35mm camera negative and finegrain material, it features a gleaming soundtrack as well as the novel theatrical trailer. This is the right deal–not a backyard dupe offered in a quickie transfer (probably to analogue) for el cheapo prices. If you want CYRANO, this class act version is the one to take. SPECIAL NOTE: The specification notes indicated on the Amazon spot are WRONG–this disc is encoded “Space Zero” not “Place One” as is stated. It will play on any DVD player anywhere in the world. So, what are you waiting for?? (Review refers to Hal Roach Studios DVD version released by Image Entertainment.)
